History

Dixie Care & Share is an independent community-based charity which was founded in 1980 by Ruth and Harvey McGee. Their initial idea to help others was formulated by visits to the churches and leading community organizations in St. George. These allies told them that the true need was to have a place to focus all of the assistance that they were willing to provide through one organization. Their compassion, working with others through churches and community organizations, has created an organization which thousands of people depend on for help. Dixie works with the community to gather food, growing to a current number of almost 9000 food boxes handed out in 2010 to those in need.

Along the way the organization has stretched to meet additional needs, working with other groups to supply more than food.
–They have worked with the Salvation Army to distribute vouchers which assist the stranded to get to their destinations. They have used gas vouchers to help people who need a job with the gas to get to work or an interview.
–Dixie uses Workforce Services to assist the shelter guests and other local workers to find day labor jobs. Workforce services also helps Dixie with the training classes that are used to provide real experience job skills to some of those re-entering the work force.
–Dixie has joined forces with many of the area churches to provide an outlet for them to give to the community without each having to set up their own caring institution.
– Dixie has worked with retail outlets, and business institutions to provide a conduit for activities to aid those in need.

Dixie Care & Share has grown exponentially from its humble beginnings. As the community grows and the City of St. George becomes a bigger spot on the map we are challenged with the growing numbers of people who require a helping hand.
